Two Diagnoses, One Child: Understanding Autism & ADHD
October is ADHD Awareness Month, a time to learn more about ADHD and how it can affect children. ADHD and autism are different conditions that can affect how a child learns, communicates, and experiences the world. Some children may have both, sometimes referred to as AuDHD (London Psychiatry Clinic, 2026).
Understanding how these two conditions can overlap may help parents better understand their child’s needs.
How can Autism and ADHD overlap?
Autism can affect communication, social interaction, sensory experiences, and a child’s need for routines. ADHD can affect attention, activity levels, impulsivity, and a child’s ability to plan and organize tasks (American Psychiatric Association, n.d.).
Some challenges can look similar. A child may have trouble staying focused, following instructions, managing emotions, or adjusting to changes (Neurodivergent Insights, 2026).
When both conditions are present, these challenges can overlap and affect each other. This means that every child may experience them differently.

What might this look like?
A child may like having a predictable routine but still struggle to follow it because they have difficulty with attention or organization.
Another child may enjoy moving around and staying active but also become overwhelmed by loud sounds, certain textures, or busy places.
These behaviors are not always a child being “difficult.” They may be signs that something in their environment or routine is not working for them.

How can parents help?
1. Keep Routines Clear
Use visual schedules, reminders, or simple steps to help your child know what comes next.
2. Break Tasks Down
Give one step at a time when an activity feels difficult or overwhelming.
3. Offer Breaks
Movement or quiet breaks can help when your child needs time to reset.
4. Use Their Interests
Connect learning activities to things your child enjoys to make participation easier.
5. Notice What Works
Pay attention to what helps your child focus, communicate, and feel comfortable. Adjust support based on their individual needs (Neurodivergent Insights, 2026).
